Itβs made of steel and covers his face.
He wears it often;
To hide his smile,
And his eyes.
But sometimes the mask is down;
When he is unawares.
But in those times
I see beneath.
I see flesh.
I see a smile,
And his eyes.
Do I like what I see?
Sometimes.
Only…
Once…
Just once…
The flesh slipped.
And I realised;
The flesh was not flesh,
But another mask.
Underneath there was another layer.
It was made of lead;
The fatal kind.
So,
Do I like what I see?
I don’t know.
In all these years,
I have never seen his face.

For Trifecta. The word this week is MASK.
This is strange, and interesting. Makes me think of the nesting dolls where you keep opening them to find another doll inside. Seems like you could do that forever…
After I wrote it and re-read it, it reminded me of the onion metaphor used in Shrek π thanks for your comment, Janna.
How terrible, in all those years to have never seen the true face.
‘the flesh slipped’ *shiver*
Some people are simply afraid to open themselves to those around them with the result that they are always lonely.. Thanks for your comment, Kymm.
This is great!
Thanks Draug.
Phantom of the Opera, eh? Reminded me of Phantom of the Opera. Creepy stuff.
Hehe π Glad it reminded you of something…though I hope it is the Gerard Butler version π
Creepy. I like the make beneath the mask.
Strange,worrying! Lead….
Oh!This was terrific Sandra!Loved the idea of a mask beneath a mask-we have met many such people in our lives,no?Frightening,to say the least!
Unfortunately, yes. Many people are like this. But they are the ones who suffer most from the trait, I think.
Possible-we normal people can never fathom their intentions or feelings.
Wow, this is creepy and sad. Very compelling opener to an interesting story. Please write more.
Hehe, okay Lumdog. I’ll try π
This is really interesting. Maybe we never see the actual real person as we all have different masks we wear in different settings. Hmm. Thanks for linking up!
That is a very philosophical comment and probably true. Only, some people hide themselves more than others.
